Who’s Hiring? 12 Organizations Uplifting the Black Community was originally published on Idealist Careers.

Started in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian and educator, Black History month was originally a week long, until it was expanded by President Gerald Ford in 1976, largely in part to the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1960s.

Black History Month is meant to honor the vast spectrum of Black American experiences and the countless ways the Black community has enriched American society, despite the overwhelming obstacles presented by systemic oppression that, in many ways, are still ongoing today.
